A new province, split from Tehran province in 2010, with Karaj as its capital. It’s nicknamed as ‘Little Iran’, as it’s the 2nd destination of domestic migration from all over Iran, after Tehran. The province gets its name from the Alborz Mountains which covers vast parts of this province to the north. Karaj, the provincial capital, has a long history and has been mentioned in ancient texts like Avesta and Shahnameh. There are remains of Zoroastrian fire temples and Achaemenid monuments around the city.

Geography
Karaj-Chalus road, one of the most scenic roads in Iran, connects Alborz province to the Caspian sea. Tehran is a short drive to the east. Qazvin province lies to the west and Markazi Province to the south.

The North of the province is a humid to semi-humid mountainous region, while the south is dry.

Climate
Taleghan is the coldest town and Eshtehard is the hottest town of the province. Summer is the best time for visiting this area as it has mild weather then. However, Ski resorts in the north of the province host man tourists during the winter period.
